Friday is the last day of school and the last chance to hand in the letters we will be writing this week.

Letters can be written in class. If you need help with the German please ask me. Always try to do as much as you can in German yourself, using simple sentences and vocabulary.  Hand in a draft so I can help you with translating into German for those parts that you couldn’t do yourself. Drafts should be handed in tomorrow or Wednesday at the very latest.

Try to answer questions your penpal asked you and add some pictures or drawings if you like.

Last week we worked on little posters to send to our German pen pals. Each poster should be about a famous place in or around San Diego so students in Germany get an idea of how we are spending our time here and what they could visit if they ever came over.

The poster should contain 5 simple sentences in German about that place: What it is, what you can do there, what you like about etc.

The sentences could and still can be handed in in English for me to translate. I do expect you to write as much as you already know in German though.

There should be  a heading, the text should be easy to read (big letters, dark color) and there should be one or two pictures for illustration.

The deadline was today but posters can still be handed in until Friday. The sooner the better, I’m grading them down a little for each day they are late.

Our letters arrived in Germany!

Now let’s see, I hope they don’t need as much time as we did to get all their letters together…

Exciting!

Today we wrote down what to study for the test on Friday. Here is the information again in case somebody’s notes got eaten by the dog, I know that happens a lot.

1. The right forms of mein/dein/sein/ihr
(we copied a table) Basically it is without “e” for words with “der” and “das” and with an “e” for words that are “die” or plural (plural is always die).

2. Vocabulary: Clothes and accessories.

3.Going places:
Ich fahre…
nach Italien
nach Madrid
ans Meer
ins Gebirge
in die Schweiz/Turkei/USA
(see vocabulary list)

4. Questions:
Wohin faehrst du in Urlaub?
I think we wrote down another question that I can’t think of right now.

5.Word order:
If there is a sentence with a time: First comes the time, then the verb, then the rest: Im Juli fahre ich nach Italien.

6. Im for months and seasons: im Juli, im Winter

Am for days: Am Montag.

7.Weather: See vocabulary list.

We are gonna have pen pals in Germany! We already wrote our first letters together about two weeks ago and once I finally get the last missing ones I’ll send them off. Then all we have to do is wait and we’ll hopefully get some interesting answers. Right now the German students are enjoying their “fall break” which lasts two weeks.

The school is called Herderschule and is located in Giessen, close to Frankfurt. Take a look at their website if you like:

Dear parents,

as your children have probably already told you we’re currently practising a play. We also plan on presenting the play to a couple of classes from our school and to you of course!

I’m trying to get the Multi Purpose Room (Cafeteria) some time early in the morning or right before school is over, so chances are higher that you will be able attend. The date will probably be somewhere between the 13th and 22nd of May. I hope to find out these days.

It would be great if some of you could volunteer to help the students create their costumes and some simple things for the scenerie. No sewing or painting skills necessary! On the day of the play we could also use volunteers to help.

If you want to help with the play or have any questions, please let me know!

The kids and I practise the play almost every day and they are really great at it. For those who still feel insecure about their lines and the pronunciation I read the whole play and recorded it. Whoever wants to can this way practise at home or in class by listening to the recordings.

The Schildkröte (Turtle) is only for 4th grade!

I had to postpone the test for 5B until Tuesday because today, Friday and Monday one third of the class will be in Middle School during our German lessons. More time to practise! (-:

4C will be writing the test tomorrow since they go on a field trip to Old Town next week.

Answer the 7 questions about the family tree on the sheet. Answer all questions related to Thomas: Who is Angelika for Thomas? His aunt? His sister? In German of course.
